- Even though you are no longer partners, you are both still parents
- Children can cope well with their parents’ separation or divorce if there is low conflict and they have access to both parents and extended families
- Your parenting relationship continues even though your relationship as partners stops.
At first it may seem impossible to separate out the strong feelings you might have about your ex-partner in order to parent your child co-operatively. The important thing to remember is that you don’t have to be friends; you just need to be able to develop a mutually respectful relationship so that you can sensibly discuss your child with your ex-partner.
If you are willing to make any necessary changes this can make all the difference to how your child experiences the separation or divorce.
